About Ukrainian keyboard converter

Many people in Ukraine switch between three layouts, Ukrainian, English and often Russian, and each switch can go wrong in two ways. This page handles both. Type Ukrainian with English on and you get ghbdsn instead of привіт; type it with the Russian layout on and you get Привыт, because і, ї and є sit where Russian has ы, ъ and э.

It opens with English (US) to Ukrainian (Enhanced), the layout Windows installs for Ukraine, and leans to Ukrainian when a short word could also be Russian: ghbdsn reads as привіт here, while the general converter would offer привыт. Cyrillic that reads better as Ukrainian keys is spotted too, so Привыт як справи turns into Привіт як справи without touching the menus.

On the Enhanced layout the apostrophe is on the key left of 1, so an English ` becomes ' in words like м'ята, and ґ is on the extra key beside the left Shift. The older Windows layout called simply Ukrainian, with ё on the key left of 1, is not listed; apart from that one key its letters sit in the same places, so the result is the same for everything else.

Going the other way, руддщ цщкдв typed with Ukrainian on becomes hello world, and a message where only some words slipped can be repaired word by word with the switch below the text. Nothing is translated along the way: surzhyk, names and typos stay exactly as they were typed.

Privacy

The text you paste on this Ukrainian page is converted on your own device; nothing is uploaded. The page keeps its own draft and layout choice in local storage, apart from the other keyboard pages, and Clear wipes the draft.

Ukrainian keyboard converter: frequently asked questions

What does перекладач розкладки do?
It re-reads text typed with the wrong keyboard layout on the layout you meant, so ghbdsn becomes привіт and руддщ becomes hello. Nothing is translated and no dictionary is used: every key you pressed is looked up on the Ukrainian Enhanced keyboard, which keeps names, slang and surzhyk exactly as you typed them.
How do I fix Ukrainian typed on the Russian layout?
Paste it. Ukrainian і, ї and є are on the keys where Russian has ы, ъ and э, so Привыт, ъжак and эвропа come out as Привіт, їжак and європа. The page detects the Russian layout and converts to Ukrainian; if it guesses wrong, set “Typed on” to Russian and “Meant for” to Ukrainian.
Where are the apostrophe and ґ on the Ukrainian keyboard?
On Ukrainian (Enhanced) the apostrophe is on the key left of 1, which types ` in English, and ґ is on the extra key next to the left Shift; laptops without that key use AltGr+U instead. So v`znf becomes м'ята. Shift on the apostrophe key gives the hryvnia sign ₴.
Why does this page pick Ukrainian when a word could be Russian?
Many words use the same keys in both languages, and a short one like ghbdsn could be привіт or привыт. On this page Ukrainian wins those close calls, while Russian is still chosen when the text clearly reads as Russian, as ghbdtn does. Change “Meant for” if the guess is not what you meant.
Can it repair a message where only some words are wrong?
Yes. With “Convert only the words that look wrong” on, a line such as “Привіт, zr cghfdb&” keeps its first word and fixes the rest into “як справи?”. Links, numbers and abbreviations stay as they are, and one- or two-letter words follow the words around them, so glance at those before sending.
