How we calculate
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
Metric
BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)²
Imperial

For you: 65 kg ÷ (1.65 m)² = 23.88, shown to one decimal as is standard. BMI Prime = BMI ÷ 25 (the upper limit of a healthy BMI); below 1.0 is under that limit.

BMI is a quick screening number, not a diagnosis. It doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes can score high, and it says nothing about where fat is carried; waist circumference adds useful context.

About BMI, calorie & TDEE calculator

Body mass index compares weight with height to give one number that screens adults for under- and overweight. Enter your height and weight in centimetres and kilograms or in feet, inches and pounds, and the calculator returns your BMI to one decimal place, its category, a colour-banded gauge, BMI Prime, and the weight range that counts as healthy for your exact height — 50.4 to 67.8 kg at 165 cm, for instance.

You can switch between the World Health Organization's international adult categories and the lower Asia-Pacific cut-offs, under which overweight starts at 23 rather than 25 because type 2 diabetes and heart disease appear at lower BMIs in many Asian populations. A table shows every category with the weight band it represents for your height.

Two more tabs go beyond BMI. Calories estimates your basal metabolic rate with the Mifflin-St Jeor, revised Harris-Benedict or Katch-McArdle equation, multiplies it by an activity factor to get total daily energy expenditure, and lists intake targets for losing or gaining a set amount each week. Macros turns any of those targets into grams of protein, carbohydrate and fat for a balanced, low-carb or high-protein plan.

BMI cannot tell muscle from fat, ignores where fat is stored and does not apply to children, pregnant women or very muscular athletes; it is a screening measure, not a diagnosis.

BMI, calorie & TDEE calculator: frequently asked questions

What is a healthy BMI for adults?
The World Health Organization classes a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 as a healthy weight, 25 to 29.9 as overweight and 30 or more as obesity. For people of Asian descent the Asia-Pacific guidance lowers the thresholds: 18.5 to 22.9 is healthy and overweight begins at 23. At 175 cm tall, the WHO range corresponds to about 56.7 to 76.3 kg.
How do I calculate BMI by hand?
Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. Someone weighing 70 kg at 1.75 m has a BMI of 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9. With pounds and inches, multiply the weight by 703 first: 160 lb at 5 ft 9 in, or 69 inches, gives 703 × 160 ÷ 69² = 23.6. BMI is usually rounded to one decimal place.
Is BMI accurate if I'm muscular?
Not very. BMI only uses height and weight, so a rugby player or bodybuilder with little body fat can register as overweight or even obese, while an older adult who has lost muscle may look healthy. Waist circumference — under half your height is a common target — or a body-fat measurement gives a clearer picture alongside BMI.
Why are Asian BMI cut-offs lower?
Studies collected by the WHO found that many Asian populations have more body fat and a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease at the same BMI as European populations. The WHO Western Pacific Region therefore uses 23 as the overweight threshold and 25 for obesity, and several countries, including India, Singapore and Japan, apply similar lower cut-offs in clinics.
Can I use BMI for children and teenagers?
Not with the adult categories. Between ages 2 and 19, body fat changes with growth and differs between boys and girls, so BMI is plotted on BMI-for-age growth charts from the CDC or WHO. A child at or above the 85th percentile is considered overweight and at or above the 95th percentile obese. Ask a paediatrician to interpret the result.
