How we calculate

Age is counted the way people say it: whole years first, then whole months, then the remaining days.

age = the largest years + months such that birth date + that ≤ today, plus the leftover days
Months are added with month-end clamping: Jan 31 + 1 month = Feb 28 (or 29).

For you: May 15, 1990 + 36 years 5 months = Oct 21, 2026 − 6 days. Total days are an exact count of calendar days, so leap days are included.

People born on February 29 celebrate on February 28 in common years here (some countries legally use March 1). The Chinese zodiac follows the lunar new year, so January and early-February birthdays often belong to the previous animal.

About Age calculator

Enter a date of birth and the calculator gives the exact age in years, months and days, the way it is written on forms and said out loud, together with the same span expressed as total months, weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds. When the "age on" date is today, the hour, minute and second counters tick live; add a time and time zone of birth and they become exact to the second, including daylight-saving shifts in the birthplace.

The next-birthday card counts down the days, names the weekday it falls on and the age you will turn. Fun facts follow: the day of the week you were born, your Western star sign, your Chinese zodiac animal and element — worked out from the lunar calendar, so a late-January birthday is not misfiled — and your generation from the silent generation to Gen Alpha. A milestones list shows when you were or will be 10,000 and 20,000 days old, 1,000 weeks old, and your next half birthday.

Two more modes cover common questions. Pick any past or future date to find the age someone was or will be on that day, such as a school entry cut-off or a retirement date. Age difference takes two birth dates and reports the gap in years, months and days, plus the total days between them.

The calculator uses the Gregorian calendar throughout and counts only civil dates for years, months and days, so results never drift by a day because of time zones.

Age calculator: frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my exact age?
Count whole years from your birth date, then the whole months after your last birthday, then the remaining days. Someone born on May 15, 1990 is 36 years, 5 months and 5 days old on October 20, 2026: 36 years reach May 15, 2026, five months reach October 15, and five more days reach October 20. The calculator handles months of different lengths automatically.
How many days old am I?
Subtract the birth date from today's date and count every calendar day, including each February 29 in between. For a birthday of May 15, 1990, that is 13,307 days on October 20, 2026 — 1,901 weeks exactly. The 10,000-day milestone falls about 27 years and 4 months after birth, which many people celebrate as a once-in-a-lifetime birthday.
When does someone born on February 29 have a birthday?
In leap years on February 29; in other years this calculator uses February 28, the day before the month ends, which is the most common custom. Some legal systems count March 1 instead — Hong Kong's law, for example, treats a leap-day baby as reaching a new age on March 1 in common years. Either way, age only changes once a year.
Why doesn't my Chinese zodiac animal match my birth year?
The Chinese zodiac year begins at Lunar New Year, which falls between January 21 and February 20, not on January 1. A child born on February 1, 1984 belongs to the Water Pig of 1983, while one born a day later, on February 2, 1984 — Lunar New Year that year — is a Wood Rat. This calculator reads the lunar calendar to get it right.
Is Korean age different from international age?
It used to be. Traditional Korean age counted a newborn as one year old and added a year every January 1, so someone could be up to two years older than their international age. Since June 28, 2023, South Korea officially uses international age — the count from birth this calculator shows — for legal and administrative purposes, though the old system still appears informally.
