Full-width ↔ half-width converter haqida

Japanese text mixes two widths of the same characters. Full-width (全角) letters, digits and katakana take a whole square, like a kanji; half-width (半角) ones take half, like Latin text. Forms are strict about which they get: a postal code or phone number field may refuse 03 and want 03, an older system may ask for ハンカク katakana, and a design may need ABC to line up with the kanji around it. This converter switches between the two in either direction, with a choice of letters and digits, symbols, katakana and spaces, so you can change one kind and leave the rest alone.

Katakana are converted with their voicing marks: ガ becomes ガ and back again, パ becomes パ, and ヴ becomes ヴ. A long-vowel mark typed between digits (03ー1234) becomes the hyphen it was meant to be. Hiragana can turn into katakana or the other way round, which is how furigana fields want a name.

The bank transfer mode writes a name the way Japanese banks send it in the Zengin (全銀) format: half-width katakana in capitals, small ャ ュ ョ ッ written full-size as ヤ ユ ヨ ツ, the middle dot replaced by a space, and company types shortened to the standard abbreviations, such as カ) for a 株式会社 at the start. Every change is listed with the reason, characters a bank would reject are highlighted, and the length is checked against the 30 characters of the name field.

Kanji can't be converted to a width or to kana by rules alone, so they are flagged rather than guessed.

What is the difference between full-width and half-width characters?
Full-width (全角) characters fill the same square as a kanji, so ABC and 123 line up with Japanese text. Half-width (半角) characters are the narrow ones used in English, and half-width katakana such as カタカナ are a narrow form kept from early computers. They look similar but are different characters, which is why a form can reject one and accept the other.
Why do banks change ャ, ュ, ョ and ッ to ヤ, ユ, ヨ and ツ?
The Zengin format that Japanese banks use to send transfers has no small kana, so the account name is stored with full-size letters: キャッシュ is sent as キヤツシユ and ジョウ as ジヨウ. When you type a recipient or sender name, writing it this way matches how the bank holds it and avoids a transfer being returned for a name mismatch.
How are company names written in a bank transfer?
Company types are replaced by short codes, with a bracket showing where they stood: 株式会社テスト becomes カ)テスト, テスト株式会社 becomes テスト(カ, and a type in the middle is written (カ). The tool knows the common ones, from 有限会社 ユ and 合同会社 ド to 医療法人 イ and 一般社団法人 シヤ. Your bank's own list decides in the end.
Which characters are allowed in a bank transfer name?
Half-width katakana without small letters, the voicing marks ゙ and ゚, capital A to Z, digits, the space and ( ) - . / are accepted everywhere. The comma, ¥, 「 」 and ヲ are in the Zengin set, but some banks refuse them, so they are marked for you to check. Kanji, hiragana, the middle dot and symbols such as & are not allowed.
Can it convert kanji to half-width or to katakana?
No. Kanji have no half-width form, and their reading depends on the word, so it can't be produced by a table: 中田 may be ナカタ or ナカダ. Kanji are left as they are and, in bank mode, flagged. Type the reading in hiragana or katakana instead, or get it from a kanji-to-kana dictionary tool first and convert that.
