How to use PDF to Word
- 1
Choose the PDF
Drop the file on the page or browse for it. A locked PDF asks for its password, which is used only to open it in this tab.
- 2
Pick editable or exact
Editable text rebuilds flowing paragraphs you can rewrite; Exact layout keeps every page as a picture with hidden, searchable words. Enter a page range if you only need part of the file.
- 3
Convert and review
Pages are read one after another with a progress bar and a Cancel button, then the preview lists the headings, lists and tables that were found.
- 4
Download the .docx
Save the document and keep working on it in Word, Google Docs, Pages or LibreOffice.
Limits and Pro
Free: PDFs up to 50 MB and up to 200 pages per conversion. A longer document converts its first 200 pages and tells you, so you can convert the rest as a second range.
Pro converts up to 5,000 pages in one run and accepts files up to 4 GB, limited in practice by your device's memory. See Pro
About PDF to Word
The output is a .docx file rebuilt from the text the PDF already contains. Each line keeps its size, bold, italic and color; lines are joined into real paragraphs that rewrap as you type, words hyphenated at line ends are mended, and alignment and indents carry over. Larger or bolder lines become Word headings (Heading 1 to Heading 4), so the navigation pane and an automatic table of contents work straight away. Bullets and numbering turn into genuine Word lists instead of typed symbols, text set out in aligned columns becomes a Word table, and photos, logos and diagrams are inserted as pictures where they sit in the reading order. Two- and three-column pages are read column by column, and every PDF page starts a new page in the document with its own size and orientation.
Typical uses are reusing a contract or report you only have as a PDF, updating an old CV, or quoting long passages without retyping them. Exact layout suits forms and designed pages where looks matter more than editing: each page becomes a background image with the words still searchable underneath.
What it cannot do: a scanned page is only a picture, so there is no text to rebuild until you run OCR. Charts arrive as images rather than editable Word charts, form fields and comments are left out, and font names are kept as they are (Helvetica becomes Arial), so Word substitutes any font you don't have installed and line breaks can shift slightly.
Privacy
PDF.js reads your file inside this browser tab, and a background worker on the same device assembles the Word document from what it finds. No page, image or sentence of the PDF is sent to a server; the only downloads are the converter's own code files.
Features
Paragraphs, not text boxes
Lines are stitched into flowing paragraphs, so editing a sentence reflows the rest of the page instead of colliding with frames.
Real headings and lists
Font sizes decide Heading 1 to 4, and bullets or numbers become Word's own list formatting with correct indent levels.
Tables and pictures
Column-aligned figures come back as Word tables, and embedded photos or vector diagrams are cropped out as images.
Column-aware reading order
Newsletter and paper layouts are read down each column before moving across, then reflowed into a single column.
Exact layout option
Keeps each page pixel-identical as a background image while the hidden text layer stays searchable in Word.
