About Persian date converter

Iran's official calendar, the Solar Hijri or Shamsi calendar, counts years from the Hijra like the Islamic calendar but follows the sun: each year starts at Nowruz, on the day of the March equinox. Its first six months, Farvardin to Shahrivar, have 31 days, the next five have 30, and Esfand has 29, or 30 in a leap year. That is why a Persian date such as 1 Mehr falls on 22 or 23 September every year, while the Hijri date of the same day moves.

This page converts a Shamsi date to the Gregorian calendar (miladi) and back. Type the year, pick the month by name and choose the day; the result appears in English and in Persian script with Persian digits, ۲۹ مهر ۱۴۰۵ for 21 October 2026, together with the weekday and the lunar Hijri date that Iranian calendars print alongside.

Leap years are not a simple rule of every fourth year. The browser's Persian calendar uses an arithmetic cycle, and we compared it with an astronomical calculation of the equinox and the noon-in-Tehran rule for every Nowruz from 1300 to 1500: they match except 1309, when the equinox fell four minutes after noon. The chart below lists Nowruz for 1300 to 1450 with the length of Esfand.

Afghanistan uses the same solar year with its own month names, Hamal to Hut, so Afghan dates convert correctly when you count the months in order.

Privacy

Shamsi dates are converted with the Persian calendar built into your browser, inside this page, and nothing you type is sent to a server. The last date and calendar you used are stored in this browser's local storage only.

Persian date converter: frequently asked questions

How do I convert a Shamsi date to Gregorian?
Enter the Solar Hijri year, choose the month and day, and the Gregorian date appears in the large card. As a rough check, add 621 to the Shamsi year for dates from Farvardin to about 10 Dey, and 622 from then to the end of Esfand: 1405 is 2026 until late December and 2027 afterwards.
Why does Nowruz fall on 20 or 21 March?
Nowruz is the day the sun crosses the equator northward, as seen in Tehran. If the equinox comes before noon Iran time, that day is 1 Farvardin; if it comes after noon, the new year starts the next day. The equinox moves about six hours later each year and jumps back after a Gregorian leap day, so in the chart Nowruz is mostly 21 March, 22 March in some years before 1960 and ever more often 20 March since 1996.
Which Persian years are leap years?
A year is a leap year when the next Nowruz comes 366 days after its own, which gives Esfand a 30th day. That happens about eight times every 33 years, usually every fourth year with a fifth-year gap now and then. The chart marks each leap year from 1300 to 1450, for example 1403, whose Esfand had 30 days.
Does the converter work for Afghan solar dates?
Yes, as long as you count the months: Afghanistan's solar calendar has the same year and month lengths, with Hamal as the first month, Sawr the second and so on to Hut, the twelfth. Choose the month in the same position, for example Mehr for Mizan, the seventh month, and the Gregorian result is the same.
How do I get the date in Persian script?
Each result shows the date as it is written in Iran, with Persian month names and digits, such as ۲۹ مهر ۱۴۰۵. Use the copy button on the card to copy both the English and the Persian form, or Copy all for every calendar at once. The chart also writes each year in Persian digits.
