About Ethiopian calendar converter
Ethiopia's calendar has twelve months of exactly 30 days and a short thirteenth month, Pagume, of five days, or six in a leap year. Its year begins on Enkutatash, 1 Meskerem, which is 11 September in the Gregorian calendar, or 12 September in the year before a Gregorian leap year. Because it counts the birth of Christ seven to eight years later than the Western calendar, 21 October 2026 is 11 Tekemt 2019 in Ethiopia.
This page converts an Ethiopian date to the Gregorian one and back. Choose the year in the Ethiopian count (Amete Mihret, written ዓ.ም.), the month from Meskerem to Pagume and the day. The result shows the date in English and with its Amharic month name, ጥቅምት for Tekemt, along with the weekday and twelve other calendars. Leap years work as in the Julian calendar: every fourth Ethiopian year, the one before a year divisible by four, gets a sixth day of Pagume.
The chart lists Enkutatash for every Ethiopian year from 1940 to 2060 EC, the Gregorian years each one spans and the length of Pagume, so you can see at once whether a year had 365 or 366 days.
The converter does not change the time of day. Ethiopians count the hours of daylight from about 6 a.m., so 3 o'clock in Ethiopian time is 9 a.m. in Western time; convert the clock separately if a document gives one. The Eritrean Orthodox Church keeps the same calendar.
Privacy
Ethiopian dates are converted with the calendar built into your browser, inside this page, and no date you enter is sent anywhere. The last date you looked up is remembered in this browser's local storage.
