How to use Split Excel file

XLSX, XLSM, XLSB, XLS or ODS. If it has several sheets, pick the one to split in the input options.

Rows per file, a number of equal parts, or one part for each value of a column such as Region or Manager.

  3. 3

    Choose files or sheets

Excel files in a ZIP give one workbook per part; “One Excel workbook” puts every part on its own sheet instead.

About Split Excel file

This page splits one sheet of an Excel workbook into smaller pieces, each with the sheet's header row at the top. Typical jobs: sending every branch or sales manager only their own rows, cutting a price list into parts a marketplace or 1C import will accept, or breaking a long register into monthly sheets.

The rows are copied as cells, not as text, so numbers stay numbers and keep their number formats — currency, percentages, thousands separators — and dates stay real dates with the format they had. Column widths come along too. Formulas are replaced by the values Excel last calculated, which keeps a part correct even when the rows its formula referred to went to another file.

You choose the shape of the result: separate .xlsx files packed in a ZIP (handy for e-mailing each person their own file), or a single workbook with a sheet per part named Part 1, Part 2… or after the column value. The parts can also be written as CSV, with dates in ISO form (2024-05-01) and the encoding and delimiter you need.

Older .xls and OpenDocument .ods files are read as well, and the parts are always saved in the current .xlsx format. What does not carry over: cell styles such as fills, fonts and borders, merged cells, charts, pictures, comments, data validation and the other sheets of the workbook. Each part, the header included, must stay within Excel's 1,048,576 rows.

Privacy

The workbook is opened by SheetJS in a Web Worker inside this tab and the new files are assembled there too; the spreadsheet never leaves your computer and isn't stored after you close the page.

Split Excel file: frequently asked questions

How do I split an Excel sheet into separate files by a column?
Drop the workbook, choose “Column value” and pick the column, for example Region. Every different value becomes its own file — orders-North.xlsx, orders-South.xlsx — with the header row on top and the rows in their original order. Download them together as a ZIP, or choose “One Excel workbook” to get a sheet per value instead.
Are formulas and formatting kept?
Values and number formats are kept: a price shown as $1,200.00 or a date shown as 05/01/2024 looks the same in the part. Formulas are replaced by their last calculated results so nothing breaks when related rows land in another file. Fills, fonts, borders, merged cells, charts and comments are not copied.
Can I split one sheet into several sheets of the same workbook?
Yes — under “Save the parts as” choose “One Excel workbook”. Each part becomes a sheet called Part 1, Part 2 and so on, or the column value when you split by a column. Sheet names are shortened to Excel's 31-character limit and characters Excel forbids in names are replaced. Up to 500 sheets can be created this way.
What about workbooks with several sheets?
Only one sheet is split at a time. When the file has more than one, a Sheet list appears in the input options; the preview and the parts follow the sheet you pick. To split two sheets, run the split once for each — the file stays loaded, so switching the sheet and downloading again takes seconds.
Can it split an XLS or ODS file?
Yes. Old .xls workbooks from Excel 97–2003, binary .xlsb and OpenDocument .ods spreadsheets from LibreOffice are read the same way as .xlsx. The parts are written as modern .xlsx files that every current spreadsheet program opens, or as CSV if you prefer plain text for an import.
