About Crop PDF

Crop PDF cuts the margins off PDF pages so that only the part you want is shown, printed and exported. It's useful for scanned books with thick grey borders, slides exported with wide white space, a receipt or a ticket sitting in the middle of an A4 sheet, or academic papers you want to read on a small screen without zooming in.

You can work visually or by numbers. The frame on the preview has eight handles and can be moved as a whole; the margin fields accept millimetres, inches or points and redraw the frame as you type, and the panel shows the size of the page that will remain. Detect white margins renders each chosen page on your device, finds the first and last rows and columns that hold anything darker than light grey, and proposes margins that keep a border of your choice. It can use one set of margins that cuts no content on any page, or fit every page to its own content.

The crop is stored the way PDF editors store it, in the page's crop box, which every reader respects. The cut area is hidden rather than erased, so text and images outside the frame are still in the file and come back if the crop box is reset in another editor. Turn on Shrink the paper size too to change the media box as well, which matters for print shops and some converters. Text stays selectable and links keep working.

Privacy

The crop frame, the preview and the white-margin detection run in this tab with PDF.js, and pdf-lib writes the new page boxes in a Web Worker, so the document never leaves your device. Nothing is stored after you close the page, and a password-protected file is decrypted locally by qpdf when needed.

Crop PDF: frequently asked questions

How do I crop a PDF page?
Open the PDF and drag the edges or corners of the frame on the preview until only the part you want is inside; the dimmed area is what gets cut. Choose whether the crop applies to every page or only some of them, press Crop PDF and download the result. To be exact, type the margins in millimetres instead of dragging.
How do I remove white margins from a PDF automatically?
Press Detect white margins. The tool draws each chosen page, finds where the printed content begins on every side and sets the margins to cut only blank paper, keeping the border you picked with the slider. Switch on Fit each page to its own content when pages have different layouts, as in a scanned book.
Can I crop only one page, or crop pages differently?
Yes. Under Pages, choose Pages I choose and type a single page, for example 3, to crop it alone, then run the tool again on the result with another list for a second crop. With white-margin detection, Fit each page to its own content gives every page its own crop in a single pass.
Does cropping delete the hidden part of the page?
No. Like Acrobat, the tool changes the page's crop box, so the cut area is hidden in every reader and when printing, but the text and images there remain in the file. Anyone who resets the crop box can see them again. If you need to get rid of sensitive content, redact it rather than cropping it away.
Will cropping make my PDF smaller or change its quality?
Quality stays exactly the same, since pages aren't re-rendered: text remains selectable and images keep their resolution. The file size hardly changes either, because the hidden content stays in the file. To make the file lighter as well, run it through a PDF compressor after cropping it.
