About Rearrange PDF pages

Rearrange PDF pages changes the sequence of pages in a document and saves it as a new PDF, without retyping, re-exporting or re-scanning anything. It suits reports assembled from several exports, chapters that ended up in the wrong place, an appendix that should come first, or a scanned stack that went through the feeder in the wrong order.

Dragging works with a mouse, a pen or a finger; on touch screens press and hold a page until it lifts, so scrolling stays possible. Every page can also be moved with the keyboard, and screen readers announce the new position after each move. For bigger changes, select a group of pages and send it to the start or the end in one step.

Two buttons handle scanner order automatically. Reverse order flips the whole document. Collate a double-sided scan is for a one-sided feeder: you scan the fronts of a stack, turn it over and scan the backs, which produces 1, 3, 5, 6, 4, 2; the button interleaves that into 1 to 6.

Pages are moved as they are, so their content, text layer and size don't change, and links between them still land on the right page. The bookmark sidebar isn't transferred. Sorting by the text on a page, by a date or by the numbers printed on it is not something this tool can do.

Privacy

Reordering is computed in the page and the PDF is rewritten by pdf-lib inside a Web Worker on your device; the document doesn't travel over the network at any point. If the file is encrypted, the password you enter is used locally by qpdf, a WebAssembly engine fetched from this site only for such files.

Rearrange PDF pages: frequently asked questions

How do I move a page to a different position in a PDF?
Grab the page's thumbnail and drop it between the two pages where it should go; the others make room as you drag. To move it a long way, select it and press To start or To end, then fine-tune with drags. When everything is in place, press Save new order and download the rearranged file.
My scanner put all the back sides at the end. How do I fix the order?
That's the usual result of scanning a double-sided stack on a one-sided feeder: fronts first, then the backs in reverse. Open the file and press Collate a double-sided scan in the Page order panel. Pages 1, 3, 5 and 6, 4, 2 become 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Check the thumbnails once before you save.
Can I rearrange PDF pages on a phone?
Yes. Press and hold a thumbnail for a moment until it lifts, then drag it to its new place; a quick swipe still scrolls the page. Dragging near the top or bottom edge of the screen scrolls automatically. Selecting pages and using To start or To end avoids long drags on a small screen.
Can I reverse the page order of a PDF?
Yes. Press Reverse order and the last page becomes the first, the second-to-last the second, and so on. It's handy for stacks that were fed into the scanner face up or for exports that came out backwards. Press it again to undo, or use Ctrl+Z, then save the result with Save new order.
Can it sort pages automatically by their content?
No. The tool doesn't read the text or the page numbers printed on the pages, so it can't sort by date, invoice number or heading. The order is exactly the one you set by dragging and the buttons. The only automatic arrangements are Reverse order and Collate a double-sided scan, which follow fixed patterns.
