How to use PDF to PNG
- 1
Add the PDF
Drop a single PDF of up to 50 MB. PNG is already chosen as the format, and every page shows up as a selected thumbnail.
- 2
Leave out pages you don't need
Click a thumbnail to deselect it, or type the pages you want, for example 2, 4-6, into the Pages to convert box.
- 3
Set the resolution
72 DPI suits web thumbnails, 150 DPI is right for documents and slides, and 300 DPI keeps fine print readable when zoomed or printed.
- 4
Save the PNG files
Press Convert to PNG. A one-page PDF downloads as a single image; longer documents also offer a ZIP with one PNG per page.
Limits and Pro
One PDF of up to 50 MB, up to 200 pages per conversion, from 36 to 600 DPI.
Pro handles PDFs of up to 4 GB and up to 5,000 pages in one conversion. See Pro
About PDF to PNG
PNG is a lossless format, so a page saved this way keeps every pixel exactly as PDF.js drew it: small type, hairline rules, table borders and chart labels stay crisp, with none of the fuzzy halos JPEG compression leaves around dark text on a light background. That makes PNG the better choice when the picture of a page goes into a presentation, a wiki, a design file or a bug report, or when it will be cropped and edited later, since re-saving a PNG doesn't wear it down.
The price is size. A page of plain text at 150 DPI usually fits in a few hundred kilobytes, but a scanned page or one covered with photos can be five to ten times larger than the same page as JPG; for those, switch the format to JPG or WebP. Each page is painted on a white background, so the PNG has no transparent areas even if the PDF page itself had none drawn. Pixel size follows the DPI: an A4 page at 300 DPI comes out at about 2480 × 3508 pixels, and the longest side is capped at 12,000 pixels.
The PNGs are pictures of the pages. Their text can't be selected or searched, and links and form fields are flattened into the image. If you only need the photos that are inside the PDF, extracting the embedded images keeps them at their own resolution instead of re-drawing the whole page.
Privacy
Rendering happens in this browser tab: PDF.js reads the PDF in a Web Worker, draws each page on a canvas, and your browser's PNG encoder writes the file. No page or image is sent to a server. A few PDFs make PDF.js load generic font data from the jsDelivr CDN, which contains nothing from your document.
