About HEIC, WebP & AVIF converter

This converter decodes each picture and writes it again in the format you pick, at the same pixel dimensions. JPG output uses MozJPEG at quality 90 by default and paints transparent areas white, or in a colour you choose; PNG output is lossless and optimised with OxiPNG; WebP and AVIF can be lossy with a quality slider, or lossless when you need exact pixels. The new file is named after the original with the new extension, so holiday.heic becomes holiday.jpg.

Photos are turned upright using their orientation tag before they are re-encoded, and the result is plain sRGB. Camera model, capture date, GPS position and other EXIF or XMP data are not copied into converted images, which also makes the files safer to post. An animated GIF or WebP gives a still of its first frame. SVG files are drawn at their own size, or 1,024 pixels on the longest side when they don't declare one.

The common reasons to use it: iPhone HEIC photos that a Windows PC, an older Android phone or a job portal won't open; WebP images saved from websites that an editor refuses; and PNG screenshots that should become lighter WebP or AVIF files for a blog. It can't recover quality that a lossy original already lost, so converting a small JPG to PNG makes it bigger but not sharper. TIFF is read only in Safari, JPEG XL isn't supported yet, and RAW camera files need dedicated software.

Privacy

Images are decoded by your browser where it can, and by jSquash WebAssembly codecs running in Web Workers in this tab otherwise; the re-encoding happens there too, so no picture is uploaded. The codecs load from this site after you add a file. HEIC photos in Chrome, Edge and Firefox also require the libheif decoder, about 1.5 MB from the jsDelivr CDN, which is downloaded without any of your data.

HEIC, WebP & AVIF converter: frequently asked questions

Which format should I convert to?
Choose JPG when the picture must open in any app, email client or upload form; it is the most compatible format but has no transparency. PNG is lossless and keeps transparent backgrounds, so use it for logos, screenshots and images you will edit again. WebP and AVIF give the smallest files and work in every current browser, which makes them the best choice for your own website.
Does converting an image lose quality?
Converting to PNG, or to WebP or AVIF with Lossless switched on, keeps every pixel exactly. JPG and lossy WebP or AVIF discard some detail; at the default quality of 90 that is very hard to see, while settings below 60 show blur around text and edges. Converting a lossy file to a lossless format keeps it from getting worse, but can't make it better than the source.
What happens to transparency when I convert to JPG?
JPG can't store transparency, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels are blended onto a solid colour. White is the default; the Fill transparent areas with option offers black, light grey or any colour you pick, which matters for logos that will sit on a dark website. Choose PNG, WebP or AVIF instead if the background must stay see-through.
Is my photo's location data kept after conversion?
No. Converted files are encoded fresh from the pixels, so EXIF and XMP metadata, including GPS coordinates, camera model, lens and capture time, are not carried over. That makes the converter a quick way to share a photo without revealing where it was taken. If you need to keep the camera data, keep the original file next to the converted copy.
Can I convert animated GIF or WebP files?
Only as stills. Animated GIFs and WebP files are converted to a single picture of their first frame, and a notice appears when a GIF is in the batch. To keep the motion, keep the original file or use a video tool that writes GIF or MP4. Static GIFs convert normally, with transparent pixels preserved in PNG, WebP and AVIF output.
