About Unlock PDF

Unlock PDF saves a decrypted copy of a document you are allowed to open, so it no longer asks for a password and no longer blocks printing, copying text or editing. Only the security layer is taken off: pages, fonts, images, bookmarks, links, attachments and form fields are left as they were, and the copy keeps the original's document title and properties. It handles every encryption method PDFs use in practice — 40- and 128-bit RC4 from old Acrobat versions as well as AES-128 and AES-256.

There are two situations. If a PDF shows a password prompt when you open it, it has an open (user) password, and you must type that password here; without it the content is mathematically scrambled and can't be read. If a PDF opens freely but greys out Print or Copy, it only has a permissions (owner) password, and it unlocks without asking for anything.

People use it for bank statements, payslips and utility bills that arrive locked with a date of birth or account number, so they can be archived, merged or uploaded to an accounting app without a prompt each time; and for their own old files whose restrictions get in the way. The tool doesn't guess, recover or crack passwords, and it won't help with documents you have no right to open. Once unlocked, the copy is readable by anyone who gets it, so keep it as carefully as the original.

Privacy

Decryption runs in qpdf, compiled to WebAssembly and executed in a Web Worker in this tab; the 1.3 MB engine is fetched from this site the first time you press Unlock PDF. The password you type and the decrypted pages stay in your browser's memory: nothing is uploaded, saved or logged, and closing the tab clears them.

Unlock PDF: frequently asked questions

Can I unlock a PDF without knowing the password?
Only when the file has no open password. A PDF that opens normally but blocks printing, copying or editing has just a permissions password, and that restriction is removed without asking. A PDF that asks for a password before showing anything is encrypted with it, and this tool cannot read it until you type the correct one. It does not guess or crack passwords.
My bank statement PDF is locked. What is its password?
Banks, payroll services and phone companies usually use something only you know, such as your date of birth in a set format, part of your account or ID number, or a combination of both. The covering email or the provider's help page normally explains the pattern. Once you have it, type it here and save an unlocked copy for your records or your accounting software.
Is it legal to remove a password from a PDF?
Removing protection from your own documents, or from files you have been given the password and permission to use, is generally fine. Using it to bypass restrictions an author placed on a document you are not allowed to copy or edit may break copyright law or a licence. This tool only works when you can already open the file, and it never circumvents an open password.
Does unlocking change the PDF's content?
No. Only the encryption dictionary is removed and the streams are written back unencrypted. Text, images, fonts, links, bookmarks, form fields and attachments come out exactly as they were, and the page count and layout are identical. Your original file on disk is not modified, so you still have the protected version if you need to send it again.
Is my password sent anywhere?
No. The password goes from the text box to the qpdf engine running inside this browser tab, and the decrypted file is built in memory on your device. Nothing about the file or the password reaches a server, and nothing is written to storage. You can confirm it by opening your browser's developer tools and watching the Network panel while you unlock a file.
