About WebP to JPG

WebP is everywhere on the web because it makes pages load fast, so right-clicking an image and saving it often produces a .webp file even when the page showed it as a normal photo. Outside the browser, support is patchy: some photo viewers, older versions of Photoshop and Office, messaging apps, print kiosks and many upload forms either don't open WebP or reject it. JPG works in all of them.

This page decodes each WebP, with a WebAssembly fallback for browsers that can't do it natively, and writes a JPG with MozJPEG. Most WebP images on websites are lossy, so the conversion is lossy-to-lossy: at quality 90 the extra loss is very small, but the JPG will usually be somewhat larger than the WebP, often 30–100%, because WebP's compression is more efficient. The resolution stays the same, and metadata isn't carried over.

WebP can contain things JPG can't. Transparent areas, common in product cut-outs and logos, are flattened onto white or the colour you pick under Fill transparent areas with. Animated WebP files are reduced to their first frame, since JPG has no animation. If the image has transparency you want to keep, convert to PNG instead; the WebP to PNG page does exactly that. And if a site offers the same picture in its original JPG or PNG, that file is always the better starting point.

Privacy

The WebP files are decoded and re-encoded as JPG inside your browser, using WebAssembly codecs in a Web Worker when needed. They are never uploaded, and the site doesn't see their names or contents.

WebP to JPG: frequently asked questions

Why are images I save from websites in WebP format?
Sites convert their images to WebP because it is typically 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, which makes pages faster and saves bandwidth. Browsers ask for WebP automatically, so the copy you save is that version, not the photographer's original. Converting it to JPG makes it usable in apps that don't support WebP.
Is the JPG bigger than the WebP file?
Usually, yes, by about a third to double the size. WebP's compression is newer and more efficient than JPG's, so storing the same picture as JPG at good quality needs more bytes. Lower the quality slider to around 80 if you need a smaller JPG; most photos still look clean at that setting. The width and height don't change.
What happens to transparency and animation?
JPG supports neither. Transparent pixels are filled with white, or with the colour you choose in the Quality panel, and semi-transparent edges blend into that colour. An animated WebP keeps only its first frame. Choose PNG under Convert to if you need the transparency, or keep the original WebP if the animation matters.
Does converting WebP to JPG reduce quality?
Slightly. Both formats are usually lossy, so the image is compressed a second time. At quality 90 the difference is hard to see; at very low quality settings you may notice blur and blocky areas. Converting doesn't recover anything the WebP compression removed, so the JPG can only be as good as the WebP it came from.
How do I open WebP files on Windows or Mac?
Current versions of Windows Photos, macOS Preview and all modern browsers display WebP, but many other programs, older systems and online forms still don't. Converting to JPG is the simplest universal fix. You can also open the WebP in any browser tab to view it, though saving it from there keeps the WebP format.
