About Codice fiscale calculator
Opening a bank account, signing a rental contract or filling in a tessera sanitaria form in Italy all start with the codice fiscale, and people born abroad, new residents and the parents of newborns often need to know what theirs will look like before the official card arrives. This calculator builds the 16 characters from the rules of the 1976 ministerial decree: three letters from the surname (its consonants, then its vowels, then X), three from the given name (the first, third and fourth consonant when there are four or more), the last two digits of the birth year, a letter for the month (A for January to T for December), the day of birth with 40 added for women, the four-character code of the place of birth and a check letter.
The place codes come from the Ministry of the Interior's ANPR archive: 7,894 current municipalities, 1,918 that have since merged or ceased but still appear in older codes, and 209 foreign states for people born outside Italy, such as Z404 for the United States. Type a few letters of the municipality or country and pick it from the list.
It also works backwards. Paste a codice fiscale on the Check tab, or several, and it decodes the birth date, sex and municipality, spots omocodia letters and says which check letter it expected.
The Agenzia delle Entrate points out that codes worked out by websites have no official value: yours is the one on your tessera sanitaria or in its records, and when two people would share a code it swaps some digits for letters in the newer one, which no calculator can predict.
Privacy
Surname, name, birth date and place stay in this page: the code is computed by your browser and nothing is sent to the Agenzia delle Entrate or anyone else. The municipality list is a static file downloaded from this site the first time you need it.
