How to use MP4 to MP3
- 1
Add the MP4 files
Drop up to 3 MP4 videos (M4V, MOV and other videos work too) of up to 500 MB and 10 minutes each.
- 2
Choose the MP3 quality
192 kbps constant bitrate is preselected; go up to 320 kbps or VBR V0 for music, down to 96 or 64 kbps for speech.
- 3
Fix the tags if you like
The pencil button lets you set the title and artist that music players show; they are taken from the video when it has them.
- 4
Extract as MP3
Each video becomes name.mp3; download them one by one or as audio-mp3.zip.
Limits and Pro
Up to 3 MP4 files per batch, each up to 500 MB and 10 minutes long.
Pro converts batches of up to 500 videos of up to 4 GB and 10 hours each. See Pro
About MP4 to MP3
MP4 to MP3 keeps only the sound of a video and saves it as an MP3, the audio format every phone, car stereo, smart speaker and old music player can play. An MP4 from a phone, a camera, Zoom or a social network almost always carries AAC audio; MP3 is a different codec, so the AAC stream is decoded and compressed again with the LAME encoder. That re-encode is quick — a few seconds per minute of video on most computers — and at the default 192 kbps the difference from the original is very hard to hear.
Bitrate is the main choice. 320 kbps gives the most headroom for music, 192 kbps is the usual balance, 128 kbps is fine for podcasts and lessons and 64 kbps mono is enough for a voice. Variable bitrate (V0 to V6) spends more data on complex passages and less on silence, giving smaller files for the same quality. The sample rate is kept unless you change it, and stereo stays stereo unless you choose mono.
Typical uses are saving a song from a video you made, turning a recorded lecture, sermon or interview into a podcast-style file, or getting audio for a ringtone. If the target device plays M4A, the Original option gives the untouched AAC sound with no re-encode at all. Videos with DRM, such as purchased films, can't be converted.
Privacy
Your MP4 is decoded and the MP3 encoded in this tab, through WebCodecs with a WebAssembly LAME encoder served from this site, or through ffmpeg.wasm in a Web Worker for VBR and unusual files. No video or audio leaves your device.
