About MOV to MP4

MOV is Apple's QuickTime container. iPhones, iPads, Mac screen recordings and many cameras save video in it, and MP4 was in fact designed from the same file structure. That is why most MOV files convert to MP4 without touching the picture: an iPhone video holds H.264 or HEVC (H.265) video and AAC audio, which MP4 can carry as they are, so the converter just moves the streams into an MP4 container. It takes a few seconds even for a long clip, the file size stays almost the same and the quality is identical; rotation is preserved, so portrait videos stay upright.

Some MOV files can't be copied that way. ProRes and other editing codecs from Final Cut, cameras and screen-capture apps are re-encoded to H.264, and uncompressed PCM sound from camera footage becomes AAC, so the resulting MP4 plays on Windows, Android, smart TVs and every website. That takes longer and produces a much smaller file.

Keep in mind that HEVC video, the iPhone's default since iOS 11, is copied as HEVC. Apple devices, Android phones, recent Windows PCs and most TVs play it, but some older computers and web upload forms only accept H.264. In that case pick a lower resolution before converting, which re-encodes the video to H.264, or switch the iPhone camera to Most Compatible. Live Photos' video parts, being short MOV clips, convert like any other.

MOV files are repackaged or re-encoded inside this tab, by mediabunny with your browser's WebCodecs encoder or by ffmpeg.wasm in a Web Worker. Your iPhone videos are never uploaded; only the 31 MB ffmpeg engine may be downloaded from jsDelivr if a file needs it.

MOV to MP4: frequently asked questions

Does converting MOV to MP4 lose quality?
Usually not at all. iPhone and most camera MOV files contain H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, which are copied into the MP4 unchanged, so the picture is bit-for-bit identical and the job takes seconds. Only MOV files in editing codecs such as ProRes need re-encoding; the High quality setting keeps that result visually very close to the original.
Why won't my iPhone video play on Windows or upload to a website?
Many Windows apps, older Android phones and web upload forms reject the .mov extension even though the video inside is fine. Converting to MP4 changes the container they look at. If the video is HEVC, Windows may additionally need Microsoft's HEVC Video Extensions; choosing a lower resolution such as 720p re-encodes it to H.264, which plays everywhere.
Will the converted MP4 still be in portrait orientation?
Yes. Phones store portrait videos as landscape frames with a rotation flag, and that flag is carried over when the streams are copied, so the MP4 plays upright just like the MOV. When a file has to be re-encoded, it comes out upright too, in every player and editor.
Can I convert ProRes MOV files from Final Cut or a camera?
Yes. ProRes can't be stored in a standard MP4, so it is decoded and re-encoded as H.264 with AAC audio. Expect a file many times smaller than the ProRes original and a conversion that takes a while, especially for 4K footage. The ffmpeg.wasm engine handles ProRes, so the 31 MB engine is downloaded once if your browser can't decode it.
How big will the MP4 be compared with the MOV?
For iPhone and camera clips that are only repackaged, the MP4 is within a few kilobytes of the MOV, because the same video and audio data are kept. Re-encoded files depend on the quality setting: High stays close to the original look and size of a phone video, Balanced and Small make them noticeably smaller. ProRes sources shrink dramatically.
