How to use GIF to MP4

  1. 1

    Drop animated GIFs

Add up to 3 .gif files of up to 500 MB: memes, reaction GIFs, screen captures or animations you made.

  2. 2

    Let the engine load once

Browsers can't decode GIF frames into a video, so a 31 MB engine is downloaded the first time and cached afterwards.

  3. 3

    Convert to MP4

MP4 is preselected; keep High quality for crisp edges, or pick a lower resolution for a lighter file.

  4. 4

    Download

Save name.mp4 and post it where GIF files are too big or not accepted.

Limits and Pro

Up to 3 GIFs per batch, each up to 500 MB and 10 minutes of animation.

Pro converts batches of up to 500 GIFs of up to 4 GB each. See Pro

About GIF to MP4

Animated GIF is a format from 1987: every frame is a separate image limited to 256 colours, and the only compression is lossless LZW, so a few seconds of animation easily weigh several megabytes. Converting a GIF to MP4 encodes the same frames as H.264 video, which stores only what changes between frames; the MP4 is usually several times smaller, shows smoother colour gradients, and is what X, Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram and most chat apps actually use behind their "GIF" buttons. On websites a looping, muted MP4 in a video element loads far faster than the GIF it replaces.

The converter reads the GIF with ffmpeg.wasm, keeps each frame's own display time, and writes an H.264 MP4 with no audio track. Because H.264 needs even dimensions, a GIF with an odd width or height loses one row or column of pixels. Transparent areas become black, since MP4 has no transparency, and the 256-colour dithering of the original stays visible because the frames themselves don't change.

An MP4 doesn't loop by itself: social apps and the HTML loop attribute repeat it, while desktop players stop at the end. Very short GIFs with only a couple of frames produce equally short videos, and some platforms reject clips under a second or two; if you need longer clips, the Video to GIF tool works the other way round.

Privacy

Your GIFs are decoded and encoded by ffmpeg.wasm in a Web Worker in this tab and never uploaded. The only download is the 31 MB engine itself, fetched once from jsDelivr and cached, which carries nothing from your files.

GIF to MP4: frequently asked questions

Why is the MP4 so much smaller than the GIF?
GIF compresses every frame separately and losslessly, so it stores the whole picture again and again. H.264 in an MP4 stores a full picture only occasionally and otherwise just the changes between frames, with far more efficient compression. For typical animations and screen captures the MP4 is several times smaller, sometimes ten times or more, while looking the same or smoother.
Will the MP4 loop like a GIF?
The file itself plays once, as all videos do. Twitter/X, Instagram, Telegram, WhatsApp and Discord loop short silent videos automatically, which is exactly how their GIF features work. On a website, add the loop, autoplay, muted and playsinline attributes to the video element. Desktop players such as VLC need their repeat option turned on.
What happens to transparent parts of the GIF?
They turn black. MP4 with H.264 has no alpha channel, so pixels that were see-through in the GIF get a solid colour. That looks fine for most reaction GIFs and screen captures, which have no transparency. For stickers and logos that rely on a transparent background, keep the GIF or use an animated WebP or PNG instead.
Does the MP4 keep the GIF's speed?
Yes. GIFs store a delay for each frame, and the converter keeps those timings, so pauses and fast sequences play as before and the number of frames stays the same. Like web browsers, it treats frames marked with almost no delay as lasting a tenth of a second, so the MP4 runs at the speed you are used to seeing the GIF play.
Can I convert a GIF to MP4 on my phone?
Yes, in Chrome, Safari or Firefox on Android and iPhone. The first conversion downloads the 31 MB engine, so use Wi-Fi if your data plan is small; after that it is cached. Large GIFs need a lot of memory while they are decoded, so if a phone browser stops, try a smaller GIF or a computer.
