How to use Video compressor

  1. 1

    Drop one video

Add an MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV or AVI file of up to 500 MB and 10 minutes. Its resolution, length and codecs appear right away.

  2. 2

Pick a size or a quality

Target size presets fit Discord (10 MB), WhatsApp (16 MB) or email (25 MB); Quality mode offers High, Balanced, Small and Smallest.

  3. 3

    Adjust if you like

Lower the resolution to 1080p down to 240p, cap the frame rate, choose the audio bitrate or remove the sound, and pick MP4 or WebM.

  4. 4

    Compress and compare

Watch the original and the result side by side, then download name-compressed.mp4.

Limits and Pro

One video at a time, up to 500 MB and 10 minutes long, with no watermark on the result.

Pro compresses files of up to 4 GB and up to 10 hours long. See Pro

About Video compressor

Video compressor re-encodes a video at a lower bitrate so it fits a size limit or simply takes less space, and gives you a new MP4 (H.264 with AAC audio) or, where your browser can encode them, WebM with VP9 or MP4 with AV1. In Target size mode it works out the bitrate that lands just under the limit from the video's length and the audio you keep; if the first pass still overshoots, a second pass squeezes it in, and an estimate shows the expected size before you start. Quality mode instead keeps a constant visual quality and lets the size follow. When the target is too tight for the current resolution, the tool suggests a smaller one, because a sharp 720p video looks better than a blocky 1080p one.

Encoding uses your device's hardware encoder through WebCodecs whenever the browser offers it, which is often faster than real time. Otherwise ffmpeg.wasm takes over, slower but able to handle almost any input. Title and other container tags are carried over; only the first video and audio track are kept, so subtitles and extra language tracks are dropped.

It is meant for clips sent through chat apps and email, screen recordings for a support ticket, and phone videos that eat storage. Every re-encode loses some detail, so compress from the original rather than an already compressed copy. Extreme targets, such as a 10-minute 4K video into 10 MB, produce soft, blocky results even at 240p, and the tool doesn't cut, crop or edit the picture.

Privacy

The video is read from your disk and encoded in this browser tab: by the browser's WebCodecs encoder through mediabunny, or by ffmpeg.wasm running in a Web Worker. Nothing is uploaded at any stage. ffmpeg's 31 MB core is downloaded from the jsDelivr CDN only if your browser needs it, then cached for later visits; that download carries no part of your video.

Features

Hit a target size

Presets for Discord, WhatsApp and email, or any size in MB, with a second pass if needed.

Hardware accelerated

Uses your device's video encoder through WebCodecs, with ffmpeg.wasm as the fallback.

Side-by-side check

Play the original and the compressed version next to each other before you download.

Resolution and frame rate

Scale to 1080p, 720p, 480p, 360p or 240p and cap the frame rate at 30, 24 or 15 fps.

Video compressor: frequently asked questions

How do I compress a video for Discord?
Choose Target size and the Discord preset, which aims for 10 MB, the limit for free accounts, then press Compress. The tool calculates the bitrate from the video's length, runs a second pass if needed, and shows the final size so you can check it fits. For long clips, lower the resolution to 720p or 480p so the picture stays sharp at that bitrate.
Will compressing a video reduce its quality?
Some detail is always lost when a video is re-encoded, but how much depends on the target. Halving the size of a phone video at the same resolution is hard to notice; squeezing a long clip into a few megabytes softens it visibly. Use the side-by-side players after compression to judge, and switch to Quality mode with High if the result looks too soft.
Should I choose MP4, WebM or AV1?
MP4 with H.264 plays on every phone, computer, TV and social network, so it is the safe default. WebM with VP9 is roughly 30% smaller at the same quality and plays in browsers and on Android, but not reliably on iPhone. AV1 is smaller still and appears only when your browser can encode it; older phones and TVs may fail to play it.
Why is compression slow on my computer?
Speed depends on whether your browser offers hardware encoding through WebCodecs. Chrome and Edge on recent computers often compress faster than the video plays. Without it, the tool falls back to ffmpeg.wasm, which runs on one CPU core and may take several times the video's length. Lowering the resolution, or closing other heavy tabs, speeds up either path.
What is the largest video I can compress for free?
The free plan handles one video of up to 500 MB and 10 minutes at a time. If your clip is longer, the tool tells you before you start, and you can cut it into shorter parts with a video trimmer first. Pro raises the limits to files of up to 4 GB and 10 hours, which covers full recordings of meetings, lectures and games.
