About Background remover
Background remover produces a cut-out of the main subject at the same pixel size as your original photo. With the transparent option the result is a PNG or WebP whose alpha channel keeps soft edges such as hair and fur partly see-through, so it drops cleanly onto a slide, a product listing or a design canvas. Choosing a colour, a blurred copy of the original or another picture flattens the subject onto that backdrop instead, and JPG becomes available. Camera metadata such as the model and GPS position is not copied into the output, and phone photos are turned upright first.
Typical jobs are e-commerce product shots on white, profile pictures with a clean backdrop, stickers, thumbnails and collages. The High quality model (BiRefNet lite) separates objects, animals and intricate outlines; the Fast model (ORMBG) is trained on people and is the smaller download.
The AI decides what counts as the foreground, so it struggles when subject and background share colour and texture, with glass or smoke, and with photos containing several unrelated subjects — the Touch up brushes exist for exactly those cases. It works on still images only, not video, and it cannot invent parts of the subject that were hidden behind something else in the frame.
Privacy
Segmentation runs on a neural network loaded into this browser tab — on the graphics card through WebGPU when available, otherwise through WebAssembly — so your file never leaves your device. The only network traffic is a one-time download of the model weights from Hugging Face; afterwards the remover works offline and nothing about your photos is logged.
