Fuel cost calculator

Estimate the fuel or charging cost of a trip in miles or kilometres, MPG or L/100 km, and split it between passengers.

Trip cost$37.50300 mi · 10.71 US gal
Per person$37.50just you
Per mile$0.12$12.50 / 100
How we calculate
cost = distance × consumption ÷ 100 × price
Distance in km, consumption in litres per 100 km, price per litre.

Other units are converted first: L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ MPG (US) = 282.481 ÷ MPG (UK) = 100 ÷ km/L. One mile is 1.609344 km, a US gallon 3.785 L and a UK gallon 4.546 L. For an electric car the same formula uses kWh/100 km and the price per kWh (mi/kWh is converted with 100 ÷ (mi/kWh × 1.609)).

For your trip: 482.8 km × 8.4 L/100 km = 10.71 US gal, × the price = $37.50. Real consumption varies with speed, load, weather and traffic; tolls, parking and charging losses aren't included.

How to use Fuel cost & trip calculator

  1. 1

    Enter the trip

Type the distance, or add several legs, and switch on round trip if you are coming back the same way.

  2. 2

    Describe the vehicle

Choose petrol/diesel or electric, enter fuel economy or energy use and the price per litre, gallon or kWh.

  3. 3

    Split and compare

Set how many people share the cost, and switch on Compare to test a second car against the first.

Limits and Pro

Free and unlimited: up to 20 legs per trip and 1,000,000 km or miles each, four fuel-economy units, four EV units, three volume units, one comparison vehicle and up to 50 people sharing.

About Fuel cost & trip calculator

Plan what a drive will cost before you set off. Enter the distance in kilometres or miles, your car's fuel economy and the price at the pump, and the calculator returns the trip cost, the fuel you will burn, the cost per kilometre or mile and each passenger's share. It opens with units that match your country — miles, US gallons and MPG in the United States, miles with litre prices and UK MPG in Britain, kilometres and litres per 100 km almost everywhere else — and you can switch any unit without retyping, because values are converted for you.

Fuel economy can be given as litres per 100 km, kilometres per litre, US MPG or imperial (UK) MPG; prices per litre, US gallon or UK gallon; and any currency. Electric cars are first-class: enter consumption as kWh per 100 km or 100 miles, or as miles or kilometres per kWh, plus the price of electricity at home or at a charger.

Longer journeys can be built from several legs — home to the airport, then on to a hotel — with a round-trip switch for the way back, and a per-leg cost breakdown. The compare option runs the same trip for a second vehicle, so you can see what an electric car, a hybrid or a rental would save on this journey and over every 10,000 km or miles.

Results assume steady average consumption. Real use rises with motorway speeds, heavy loads, air conditioning, cold weather and city traffic, and the figures leave out tolls, parking, ferry fares and wear on the car.

Privacy

Distances, fuel prices and vehicle details are calculated only in your browser and never uploaded. The scenario is saved in the page link — so you can send the cost to your passengers — and in this browser's local storage.

Fuel cost & trip calculator: frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the fuel cost of a trip?
Divide the distance by your fuel economy to get the fuel needed, then multiply by the price. A 300-mile drive in a car that does 30 MPG uses 10 US gallons; at $3.50 a gallon that's $35.00. In metric: 500 km at 7 L/100 km uses 35 litres, which costs 63.00 at 1.80 per litre.
How do I convert MPG to litres per 100 km?
Divide 235.215 by US MPG, or 282.481 by UK MPG. So 30 MPG (US) is 7.84 L/100 km and 30 MPG (UK) is 9.42 L/100 km. The two MPG figures differ because a UK gallon holds 4.546 litres and a US gallon only 3.785. This calculator converts automatically when you change the unit menu.
Is driving an electric car cheaper than petrol?
Usually, if you charge at home. A 300-mile trip in an EV using 3.5 miles per kWh needs about 85.7 kWh; at $0.17 per kWh that's $14.57, against $35.00 for a 30-MPG petrol car at $3.50 a gallon. Public rapid charging can cost three or four times more per kWh, so use your actual price.
How should we split petrol money on a road trip?
The simplest fair method is to divide the fuel cost by the number of people in the car. A $35.00 trip shared by three people is $11.67 each. Set People sharing to see it instantly. Some groups also add tolls and parking, or let the driver pay less; adjust the total or the split to suit your arrangement.
Why are UK and US MPG different?
Because the gallons are different sizes. An imperial gallon is 4.546 litres and a US gallon 3.785 litres, so the same car shows about 20% higher MPG in Britain. A car rated at 45 MPG (UK) does about 37.5 MPG (US). Pick the correct MPG option from the unit menu to avoid underestimating the cost.
