How we calculate
tip = tip base × tip % · total = bill + tip
The tip base is the bill total, or the amount before tax when you tip on the pre-tax amount.

Per person = total ÷ number of people. Amounts are split in whole cents with the largest-remainder method, so the shares always add up to the exact total; when it doesn't divide evenly, someone pays one cent more.

Rounding up each share raises everyone to the next whole USD amount; rounding the total raises only the total. The difference goes to the tip, so the effective tip % is shown after rounding. Itemised splits give each person their items plus an equal part of shared items, and divide tax and tip in proportion to those subtotals.

About Tip & bill splitter

Type the amount on the receipt, tap a tip percentage — 10, 15, 18, 20 or 25%, or any custom rate — and the calculator shows the tip, the new total and what each person owes. Use the plus and minus buttons to set how many people are paying; when the total doesn't divide evenly, the split is done in whole cents and the page tells you who pays the extra cent, so the shares always add up to the bill.

Two details that restaurant maths usually skips are handled for you. Switch on tipping on the pre-tax amount, enter the sales tax or VAT included in the bill as an amount or a rate, and the tip is calculated on the food and drink only, as most etiquette guides suggest. Rounding can lift each person's share or just the total to the next whole unit of currency, with the effective tip percentage recalculated so you can see what the rounding really costs.

For groups that didn't eat the same thing there are two uneven modes. By shares lets a couple pay two shares or a child half a share. By items lets each person type their own dishes — "14.50 + 4" works — adds an equal part of anything shared such as starters or a bottle of wine, and spreads tax and tip in proportion to what each person ordered. Every currency is supported, including zero-decimal ones such as the yen. Tipping customs vary widely, so the percentages are a convenience, not advice on what you owe.

Privacy

The bill, tip and everyone's names and items stay on your phone or computer — the split is worked out in the browser and nothing is sent to us. Inputs are kept in the page link, so you can text the split to the table, and in local storage until you reset.

Tip & bill splitter: frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?
It depends on the country. In the United States 15–20% of the bill is standard for table service, with 18–20% common in cities. In the UK 10–12.5% is usual unless a service charge is already added. Much of Europe rounds up or leaves 5–10%, and in Japan tipping is not customary. Check the menu or receipt for an included service charge first.
Should I tip on the total before or after tax?
Etiquette guides generally say before tax, because tax isn't part of the service. On a $108.25 bill that includes $8.25 of sales tax, a 20% tip on the pre-tax $100 is $20.00, while 20% of the full total would be $21.65. Switch on Tip on the pre-tax amount and enter the tax to calculate it that way.
How do I split a bill with the tip included?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. A $100 bill with an 18% tip comes to $118, so four people pay $29.50 each. Choose Round up each share and everyone pays $30, making the total $120 — the extra $2 raises the tip to an effective 20%, which the calculator shows next to the tip.
How do I split a bill when people ordered different things?
Use By items. Suppose Alex's dishes cost $30, Sam's $45, and they shared a $15 starter, with 8% tax and a 20% tip on the pre-tax amount. Alex's subtotal is $37.50 and Sam's $52.50; adding proportional tax and tip, Alex pays $48.00 and Sam $67.20, which together match the $115.20 total exactly.
What is a quick way to work out a tip in my head?
Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left — $64.80 becomes $6.48 — then build from it. Double it for 20% ($12.96), add half again for 15% ($9.72), or take 20% and subtract a tenth of it for 18% ($11.66). For a fast rounded figure, tip 20% of the bill rounded up to the next ten dollars.
