Full-screen black screen

Fill your display with true black to check backlight bleed, spot stuck pixels or blank an OLED screen, with the pointer hidden; it runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Or press F. Esc leaves full screen.

Backlight bleed check in a dark room

  1. Switch the room lights off and give your eyes a minute to adjust.
  2. Turn the display brightness all the way up and switch off any automatic dimming.
  3. Open the black screen and look at the corners and edges from straight in front, at a normal distance.
  4. Cloudy light that stays put when you move your head is backlight bleed. A glow that shifts with your viewing angle is IPS glow, which is normal for that panel type.
  5. Sharp dots of color are stuck or hot pixels. Confirm them with the dead pixel test

How to use Black screen

  1. 1

    Open it full screen

Press Open black screen, click the preview or press F. The pointer and the control bar vanish after two seconds without movement.

  2. 2

Choose true black or a near-black step

Keep true black for OLED and dark-room checks, or press the up arrow to lift it to 1–5 % and see whether your panel still separates those shades.

  3. 3

Decide whether the display may sleep

Keep screen on is off by default. Switch it on for a blank but awake display, and set a sleep timer if it should close by itself.

  4. 4

    Leave with Esc

Press Esc, F or the exit button in the control bar. On a phone, tap once to bring the bar back first.

Limits and Pro

Free with no sign-up: open the black screen as often and for as long as you like, use a sleep timer of up to 60 minutes, and download PNG images up to 16,384 × 16,384 pixels.

Pro removes the ads from the page; the black screen and its downloads have no limits to lift. See Pro

About Black screen

This page fills the whole display with pure #000000 and hides the mouse pointer and the control bar two seconds after you stop moving, so nothing else stays lit. On an OLED or micro-LED panel every pixel is then switched off: the screen looks as dark as when it is powered down, yet it is awake and ready.

That darkness has several uses. In a dark room it reveals backlight bleed and IPS glow on LCD monitors and laptops, which is worth checking while a shop's return window is still open. Glowing stuck or hot pixels stand out at once, and smudges on the glass show up when a lamp shines across it at an angle. It can also blank a second monitor during a film, give you a dark display while you fall asleep or meditate, or hide your desktop while a stream or a talk is paused.

The black level slider lifts the fill to 1–5 % grey (RGB 3 to 13). If those steps look identical to true black, the panel or its picture settings are crushing shadow detail. A sleep timer closes the screen after 5 to 60 minutes, and you can save a solid black PNG, JPG or WebP from Full HD to 8K, or any custom size up to 16,384 pixels per side.

What it cannot do: repair a display, cure a computer that boots to a black screen, or switch off an LCD backlight. On an LCD, black still glows faintly and draws about as much power as white.

Privacy

The black fill is drawn by the page itself and the black images are generated inside your browser, so nothing is uploaded or sent to a server. Your black level, keep-awake and sleep timer choices are remembered in this browser's local storage only.

Black screen: frequently asked questions

Does a black screen save battery?
On OLED and AMOLED screens, yes: a black pixel is switched off and draws almost no power, so an all-black display uses far less energy than a white one. On LCD screens, which most laptops and desktop monitors still use, the backlight keeps shining behind the black pixels, so the saving is small. Lowering the brightness or letting the display sleep saves more there.
What is the difference between backlight bleed and IPS glow?
Backlight bleed is light leaking around the edges of an LCD panel, usually bright patches near the corners that stay in the same place however you look at them. IPS glow is a silvery or warm sheen typical of IPS panels that changes or fades as you move your head. Strong bleed can justify returning a monitor; mild glow is normal for the technology.
Is this the same as fixing a black screen of death?
No. This page shows a black fill on purpose and repairs nothing. A computer that starts to a black screen, or a phone whose display stays dark, has a hardware, driver or operating system problem that has to be fixed on that device. If you can read this answer, your display and graphics are working.
How do I exit the black screen on a phone?
Tap the screen once to bring back the control bar, then tap the exit button at its right end. On Android the back gesture also works. iPhone Safari cannot hide its own toolbars for a web page, so there the black screen covers the page instead of going truly full screen; holding the phone sideways leaves the least of the bars visible.
Can a black screen cause burn-in?
No. Burn-in on OLED displays comes from bright, static images such as status bars, logos or game overlays wearing some pixels faster than the rest. Black pixels are switched off, so they don't age at all. The controls on this page fade out after two seconds for the same reason, so nothing static stays lit during a long session.
