About Open Graph & meta tag previewer

Meta tag previewer shows what a link will look like before you share it. It reads the tags that link previews are built from: the HTML title and meta description, Open Graph tags such as og:title, og:description, og:image and og:site_name, X card tags such as twitter:card, and the theme color Discord uses for its embed stripe. It then draws seven previews: a Google search result, Facebook and LinkedIn link posts, an X card in large-image or summary format, a Slack unfurl, a Discord embed and an iMessage-style bubble.

When a field is missing, the previews fall back the way most platforms do, for instance from og:title to the page title, and the source is noted in the warnings. The image is checked too: its pixel size and type are read from the file header, so you learn whether it is below Facebook's 200 × 200 minimum, too large for X's 5 MB limit, an unsupported SVG, or the wrong shape for a 2:1 large card.

The Write tags tab works without fetching anything and outputs a ready block of meta tags. Previews are approximations: platforms change their designs, cache cards for days, and some show different text to signed-in users. To refresh a card that was already shared, use the platform's own debugger after you publish.

Privacy

In Check a URL, the address goes to our server, which downloads that page once and the first bytes of its og:image to read the tags and the image size; nothing is stored or logged. The preview images then load in your browser directly from the site that hosts them. Write tags runs only in your browser.

Open Graph & meta tag previewer: frequently asked questions

Which tags control how a link looks when shared?
Most apps read Open Graph tags: og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url and og:site_name. X reads twitter:card to choose a small or large card and falls back to Open Graph for the rest. Google search uses the HTML title and meta description instead. Set all of them; this tool writes the full set in the Write tags tab.
What size should an og:image be?
Use 1200 × 630 pixels, a 1.91:1 ratio, as PNG, JPEG or WebP under 5 MB. That fills large cards on Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack and Discord, and X crops it slightly to 2:1 for large image cards, so keep text away from the edges. Images smaller than 600 pixels wide may appear as small thumbnails, and SVG images are not supported.
Why does Facebook or LinkedIn still show the old preview?
Platforms cache link previews, often for several days, the first time someone shares a URL. After you change your tags, ask the platform to scrape the page again with Facebook's Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn's Post Inspector. Slack, Discord and iMessage cache too and usually refresh after a while, or when the URL changes, for example with a query string.
Is anything stored when I check a URL?
No. Your browser sends the address to our server, which downloads the page and the first 256 KB of its og:image only to read tags and the image size, then returns the result. Nothing is saved or logged. The preview pictures you see are loaded by your own browser straight from the website, as they would be in the real apps.
Why can't the previewer read my page?
The page must be publicly reachable over http or https. Private and local network addresses are refused for security, pages that need a login or block bots return a login or challenge page instead, and tags added later by JavaScript aren't seen because the server reads raw HTML, as most social crawlers do. Put the tags in the server-rendered HTML.
