About Text summarizer

Long reading often comes down to a few points: what a report found, what a meeting decided, what a chapter argues. Paste up to 20,000 characters, about 3,000 words, and the summarizer returns either bullet points or a paragraph. Short keeps only the essentials, three points or two to three sentences; Medium gives five to seven points or one full paragraph; Detailed covers every section in eight to twelve points or two to three paragraphs.

The summary is written by Claude, Anthropic's AI model, with instructions to use only what your text says: no outside facts, no opinions, and names, figures and dates copied exactly. Where the text reports a claim or a study, the summary says whose claim it is instead of presenting it as settled fact. A badge shows the word count before and after, so you can see how far the text was condensed.

By default the summary is in the language of the text. You can also choose a different summary language, which is handy for getting the gist of a Russian news article in English or an English report in Uzbek.

The summarizer can't open links or files, so paste the text itself; for a PDF, copy its text out first. A summary leaves out detail by design, so go back to the source before quoting it, citing a number or basing a decision on it.

Privacy

The text you paste stays in this tab until you press Summarize. Then it is sent, with your length, format and language choices, to our server and from there to Anthropic's API; the summary comes back and nothing is kept on our side, not even in logs. Anthropic doesn't train its models on text received through its API. Your option choices are saved in this browser.

Text summarizer: frequently asked questions

Can it summarize a PDF or a web page?
Not directly: the summarizer works on text you paste, and it doesn't fetch links or open files. For a PDF, select its text and copy it into the box; for a web page, copy the article body without the menus and comments. The free limit of 20,000 characters fits most news articles and a chapter or two of a typical report.
Will the summary add anything that isn't in my text?
It's instructed not to: no outside facts, no opinions, no advice, and names, numbers and dates exactly as they appear. Language models occasionally blur a detail or merge two points, so for anything you'll quote or act on, check the figure against the original. Claims that the text attributes to someone stay attributed in the summary.
How long is each summary length?
Short gives at most three bullet points, or two to three sentences. Medium gives five to seven points, or one paragraph of four to six sentences. Detailed covers every section in eight to twelve points, or two to three paragraphs. Bullets suit notes and quick scanning, while a paragraph reads better pasted into an email or a report.
Can I get the summary in another language?
Yes. By default the summary uses the language of your text, but the Summary language menu lists sixteen languages, from English, Uzbek and Russian to Arabic, Hindi and Chinese. That's a quick way to understand an article in a language you don't read well. For anything official, have a person check the wording, since a translated summary is two steps away from the original.
Is the text I summarize kept anywhere?
No copy is kept by us. The text travels from this page to our server and on to Anthropic's API, the summary travels back, and the request ends there; we don't write the text to logs. Our server counts requests per connection in memory for 24 hours to apply the free limit of 20 a day, and that counter holds no text.
