About Meta description generator

The meta description is the short summary a search engine may show under your page title. It doesn't change your ranking directly, but a clear, specific one can make more people click. The meta description generator writes five options from your page's text, each aimed at 120 to 155 characters, the range that usually shows in full in desktop search results.

Paste the page's main text, or describe what the page offers and who it's for, choose the page type (article, home page, product, category, service or web tool) and optionally a focus keyword, which is placed near the start of at least three options. Switch on the call to action to end most of them with a short prompt such as Learn how or Shop now. Each description shows its character count with a label: good length from 120 to 160, could be longer below that, may be cut off above it.

Copy a description as plain text or as a ready-to-paste HTML tag, <meta name="description" content="…">, with quotation marks and angle brackets escaped. The descriptions are written by Claude, Anthropic's AI model, which is told not to claim anything the page text doesn't support, such as prices, awards or “the best”.

Google sometimes rewrites descriptions using text from the page itself, so a good one is likely but not guaranteed to appear. The generator doesn't fetch your page, measure pixel width or check rankings; our SEO checker and meta tag previewer cover those jobs.

Privacy

The page text, keyword and settings you enter are sent when you press Write descriptions, from this tab to our server and from there to Anthropic's API, and the five descriptions return here. We store none of it and log none of it, and Anthropic's API terms rule out training on it. Because you paste the text, your website itself is never fetched by this tool.

Meta description generator: frequently asked questions

How long should a meta description be?
Aim for about 120 to 160 characters. Google cuts snippets by pixel width rather than a fixed count, so the visible length varies, but around 155 characters usually shows in full on desktop and less on mobile. Much shorter descriptions waste space you could use to persuade. The generator labels each option so you can see which fit.
Do meta descriptions affect SEO rankings?
Not directly: Google has said for years that the meta description isn't a ranking factor. It matters for clicks, because it's often the text people read before choosing a result, and more clicks from the same position mean more visitors. A description that matches what the searcher wants also sets the right expectation for the page.
Why does Google sometimes show different text?
Google picks the snippet it thinks best answers each search. When your description doesn't match the query, or is missing, very short or repeated on many pages, it often shows a passage from the page instead. A unique, specific description for each page, summarising what's actually on it, gives yours the best chance of appearing.
Should every page have its own meta description?
Ideally, yes. Identical descriptions across many pages make them look alike in search results and are more likely to be ignored. On large sites with thousands of similar pages, writing them by hand isn't realistic, so start with your most visited pages and with those that have many impressions but few clicks in Search Console.
How do I add the description to my website?
Most website builders and CMSs, such as WordPress with an SEO plugin, Shopify or Wix, have an SEO field for each page: paste the plain text there. If you edit HTML yourself, use Copy HTML and put the tag inside the page's head section. Then preview how the page looks when shared or searched with a meta tag previewer.
