How to use Social character counter

  1. 1

    Choose platforms

Tap the chips for X, Instagram, LinkedIn, SMS or any other network you're posting to; your choice is remembered.

  2. 2

    Write the post

Type or paste into the editor. Each platform's ring fills up and its remaining count drops as you write.

  3. 3

    Trim what's highlighted

Anything over the selected platform's limit is underlined in red; click another platform in the list to preview it instead.

  4. 4

    Copy it

Use Copy to put the final text on your clipboard, then paste it into the app.

Limits and Pro

No sign-up and no length cap: all 15 platform limits are checked at once, and drafts of 60,000+ characters (a full Facebook post) are counted instantly.

Pro hides the ads on this page; counting itself has nothing to unlock. See Pro

About Social character counter

This counter answers the question every social media manager asks before hitting publish: will it fit, and where will it get cut off? Pick the networks you post to and each one gets its own progress ring and remaining count while you type.

X is measured with the same weighted rules X applies: every link counts as 23 characters whatever its real length, each emoji and each Chinese, Japanese or Korean character counts as two, and accented letters are normalised first. Text past the limit is highlighted in the editor so you can see exactly which words to trim.

For SMS the tool works out the encoding. Plain GSM-7 text fits 160 characters in one message and 153 per part after that; one curly quote or emoji switches the whole message to UCS-2, where a part holds 70 or 67. The characters responsible are marked and common look-alikes can be swapped for plain ones in one click.

Google titles and meta descriptions are measured in pixels with Arial at Google's sizes, because search results truncate by width, not by character count. The preview card shows the post as a feed card, a YouTube title, a search result or a text bubble, including roughly where “…more” folds it.

It cannot know your account type, so X Premium's longer posts and each app's future rule changes are not reflected automatically.

Privacy

Everything you type is counted by JavaScript running in this tab; no request carrying your text is ever made. Your draft, the platforms you picked and the one you were previewing are saved in this browser's local storage so they survive a refresh, and pressing Clear empties the draft.

Social character counter: frequently asked questions

Why does X count my link as 23 characters?
X wraps every link in its t.co shortener before publishing, so a link always costs exactly 23 of your 280 characters, whether it is a short domain or a 200-character tracking URL. Links typed without https://, such as example.com/launch, are detected and counted the same way, which is why your post can be shorter than you expect.
Do emoji count as one character or two?
On X each emoji counts as two, including combined ones such as family, flag or skin-tone emoji. For Instagram, LinkedIn, Threads and the other networks this tool counts what you see as one character, which matches how their apps count. In a text message an emoji forces Unicode and uses two of the 70 slots in a part.
Why is my text message split into two parts when it is under 160 characters?
It contains at least one character outside the GSM-7 alphabet, so the phone sends it as UCS-2 Unicode, which allows only 70 characters per message. Curly quotes, em dashes, ellipses and emoji are the usual culprits. The tool highlights them and its Replace button swaps quotes, dashes and ellipses for plain equivalents.
Is the Google title limit measured in characters or pixels?
Google truncates titles at roughly 600 pixels wide on desktop, not at a fixed character count, so “WWW Widgets” fills the space faster than “little lilies”. This tool measures your text in Arial at Google's size and shows how many pixels remain. Meta descriptions are measured the same way against about 920 pixels, roughly two lines.
What is the character limit for an Instagram caption and bio?
Instagram allows 2,200 characters in a caption and 150 in a profile bio. Only about the first 125 characters of a caption show in the feed before “… more”, so put the hook and any call to action there. Turn on both Instagram chips to check a caption and a bio side by side.
