How to use XML sitemap generator

  1. 1

    Collect your URLs

Paste one absolute URL per line, export them from your CMS, or choose Crawl my site and enter your home page.

  2. 2

    Set lastmod

Keep dates written after each URL, stamp every URL with today, or leave lastmod out if you don't track changes.

  3. 3

    Check the result

Review the URL count, merged duplicates, rejected lines and the XML preview; mixed hosts are flagged.

  4. 4

    Publish and submit

Download sitemap.xml, upload it to your site root, add a Sitemap line to robots.txt and submit it in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

Limits and Pro

Free: up to 200,000 pasted URLs, crawls of up to 300 pages in 90 seconds, 3 crawls every 10 minutes, and files split every 50,000 URLs or 50 MB.

About XML sitemap generator

An XML sitemap lists the pages you want search engines to find, with an optional lastmod date that hints when each one last changed. This generator writes files in the sitemaps.org 0.9 format that Google, Bing and other engines read: every location is an absolute, percent-encoded URL with XML special characters escaped, fragments are removed and repeated URLs are merged. Lines that aren't full http or https addresses are listed instead of silently dropped.

Two ways in. A pasted list is processed entirely in your browser, up to 200,000 URLs, and a date after a URL becomes its lastmod. The crawl option asks our server to start at your home page and follow links on the same host, up to 300 pages; it respects robots.txt and Crawl-delay, leaves out pages marked noindex, replaces duplicates with their canonical URL and takes lastmod from article:modified_time, og:updated_time or the Last-Modified header. Results stream back as they are found and can be edited before you download.

Large sites are split automatically into files of up to 50,000 URLs or 50 MB, with a sitemap index that points to them, delivered as one ZIP. Priority and changefreq are deliberately left out because Google ignores them. A sitemap helps discovery; it doesn't force indexing of thin or duplicate pages.

Privacy

Sitemaps built from a pasted list never leave your browser. With Crawl my site, our server receives only the start address, fetches your public pages and robots.txt to discover links, and streams the URLs back without storing pages, URLs or logs.

XML sitemap generator: frequently asked questions

Where do I put the sitemap file?
Upload sitemap.xml to the root of your site, so it is reachable at https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml, because a sitemap may only list URLs in its own folder and below. Then add Sitemap: https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml to robots.txt and submit the address in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools so both engines fetch it promptly.
Should every URL have a lastmod date?
Only if the date is accurate. Google uses lastmod when it is consistently correct and ignores it on sites where every page shows today's date. Keep real modification dates from your CMS, or let the crawler read them from your pages; choose Leave out when you have no trustworthy dates rather than stamping everything with today.
Why are some crawled pages missing from the sitemap?
The crawler skips pages robots.txt blocks for it, pages with a noindex robots tag or header, URLs whose canonical points elsewhere, error and redirect targets on other hosts, and non-HTML files. It also stops at your page limit or after 90 seconds. The summary after each crawl counts what was skipped, and you can paste missing URLs into the list.
Do priority and changefreq matter?
Not for Google, which has said it ignores both values, and Bing gives them little weight. That is why this generator writes only loc and lastmod. What matters more is that the sitemap lists canonical, indexable URLs that return 200, stays up to date when pages are added or removed, and that the URLs match the ones you link to internally.
How large can one sitemap be?
The sitemaps.org protocol allows 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed per file. When your list is bigger, the generator splits it into numbered files and adds sitemap-index.xml, which lists them; submit only the index. Gzip-compressing the files on your server is allowed, but the 50 MB limit applies to the uncompressed size.
