How to use Online notepad & whiteboard

  1. 1

    Start typing

An empty note is ready when the page opens. It saves itself a moment after you stop typing, and the list keeps every note.

  2. 2

    Format with Markdown

Use # headings, **bold**, - lists or [links](…), then switch to Split or Markdown preview to see the rendered page.

  3. 3

    Find, replace and count

Press Ctrl+F for find and replace with match-case, whole-word and regex options; the word and character count updates live.

  4. 4

    Sketch or export

Open the Sketch board tab to draw, or download a note as .txt or .md, every note as a zip, or the board as a PNG.

Limits and Pro

Free with no account: as many notes as your browser's storage allows (usually hundreds of megabytes), imports of up to 20 text files at once at 5 MB each, and sketch exports as 3200 × 2000 PNG.

About Online notepad & whiteboard

Online notepad is a scratchpad that remembers: several notes in a list, each saved into your browser's own database a fraction of a second after you type, so a closed tab or a crashed laptop doesn't cost you the shopping list, meeting notes or draft email you were writing. Notes are plain text, which means anything you paste stays exactly as it was, with no hidden formatting carried along.

When you want structure, write Markdown and open the preview: headings, bold and italic text, bullet and numbered lists, task boxes, quotes, inline code, fenced code blocks and links are rendered side by side with the source. The preview never loads remote images, so opening a note can't contact another website. Find and replace works across the whole note, highlights every match and understands regular expressions with $1-style groups.

The status line counts words, characters and lines and estimates reading time at 230 words a minute. You can import text or Markdown files as new notes and export one note or all of them.

A second tab holds a sketch board for diagrams and quick drawings, saved alongside your notes. What this notepad doesn't do: sync between devices, share notes with others, keep version history or format rich text with fonts and colours.

Privacy

Everything stays on this device. Notes and the sketch board are stored in your browser's IndexedDB database (or local storage where IndexedDB is blocked), and nothing you type, import or draw is sent to our server or anyone else. That also means there is no copy anywhere else: clearing this site's data or using a private window that you then close removes them, so export anything you need to keep.

Features

Autosave in your browser

Every keystroke is saved locally within half a second, with a list of all your notes.

Find and replace

Highlights all matches, with match case, whole words and regular expressions.

Sketch board

Pressure-sensitive pen, marker and eraser with undo, saved next to your notes.

Online notepad & whiteboard: frequently asked questions

Where are my notes stored, and can anyone else read them?
They are stored in this browser's IndexedDB database on your device, the same place web apps keep offline data. Nothing is uploaded, so neither we nor anyone else can read them over the network. Anyone who uses this browser profile can open them, though, so on a shared computer use a private window and export what you want to keep before closing it.
Will my notes still be there when I come back tomorrow?
Yes, as long as you open the page in the same browser on the same device and haven't cleared this site's data. Browsers can evict website storage when the disk is almost full, and private windows forget everything when closed, so download important notes as .txt or .md files, or all of them as one zip, from the export menu.
Can I sync notes between my phone and my computer?
No. There is no account and no server copy, which is what keeps the notes private, so each browser has its own set. To move notes, export them as a zip of Markdown files on one device and import those files on the other with the upload button above the note list. Up to 20 files can be imported in one go.
Does the online notepad work without an internet connection?
Once the page has loaded, writing, saving, searching, exporting and drawing all happen locally, so losing the connection doesn't interrupt anything. After your first visit the site's offline cache can also reopen the page itself without a network. Notes typed offline are saved in the browser like any others; there is nothing waiting to upload when you reconnect.
Which Markdown features does the preview support?
Headings from # to ######, bold, italic and strikethrough, inline code and fenced code blocks, block quotes, bullet and numbered lists, task lists with [ ] and [x], horizontal rules and links starting with http, https or mailto. Raw HTML is shown as text, tables are not rendered, and images appear as links rather than being downloaded.
