About Lorem ipsum generator

Placeholder text lets designers and developers judge a layout before the real copy exists, without readers getting distracted by what the words say. This generator produces lorem ipsum by the paragraph, sentence, word, list item or exact byte count, ready to paste into a mock-up, a CMS, a template or a test fixture.

Classic mode draws on the familiar pseudo-Latin vocabulary derived from Cicero's “De finibus bonorum et malorum” and can open with the traditional “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit”. Sentences vary between 6 and 16 words with the occasional comma, and paragraphs come in short, medium or long so you can see how a column copes with different lengths. For something lighter there are five English-flavoured styles — corporate jargon, tech startup, space, coffee shop and nature — built from a small grammar so they read like believable, slightly absurd sentences.

The output can be plain text, HTML with paragraph, heading and list tags, or Markdown with ## headings and dashed lists, and you can preview the HTML or Markdown rendered or as code. Byte mode makes the output exactly the UTF-8 size you ask for, tags and line breaks included, which is handy for testing field limits and database columns.

Every result comes from a seed. The same seed and settings always produce the same text, so a screenshot or a test can be reproduced later; press New text for a fresh seed. The generator doesn't produce real translations or meaningful content, and themed text isn't suitable as final copy.

The text is generated by a small algorithm running in this page; no request is made when you change settings or press New text. Your last settings, including the seed, are saved in this browser's local storage so the same text comes back next time.

Lorem ipsum generator: frequently asked questions

What does lorem ipsum mean?
It's scrambled Latin taken from Cicero's “De finibus bonorum et malorum” (On the Ends of Good and Evil), written in 45 BC. “Lorem ipsum” comes from the middle of the word dolorem (pain) in the phrase “neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum…”. Jumbled versions of the passage were popularised as dummy text by Letraset transfer sheets in the 1960s and spread with desktop publishing software in the 1980s.
Why use placeholder text instead of real copy?
Readable text pulls attention to the words, so reviewers start editing sentences instead of judging the typography, spacing and layout. Lorem ipsum has a natural-looking mix of word lengths that fills a design realistically while staying meaningless. Replace it before launch: search engines, screen readers and real visitors get nothing from it.
How do I get the same lorem ipsum text again?
Note the seed number in the Output panel. Entering the same seed with the same settings — unit, count, style, paragraph length and format — always produces identical text, on any device. That makes it easy to recreate a screenshot, keep design files consistent or use the text as a stable test fixture. New text simply picks a new random seed.
Can I generate lorem ipsum as HTML or Markdown?
Yes. Choose HTML to get each paragraph wrapped in <p> tags and list items inside <ul> and <li>, or Markdown for blank-line-separated paragraphs and dashed lists. Turn on Add headings to insert an <h2> or ## heading before every third paragraph. Use the Preview and Code switch to check how it renders before you copy it.
What is the byte option for?
It produces text of an exact size in UTF-8 bytes, such as 255 or 1,000, which is useful when testing input limits, SMS gateways, database columns or upload fields. Lorem ipsum uses only ASCII letters, so each character is one byte. The text is cut cleanly at the limit, so the last sentence may stop mid-way.
