Как пользоваться: Japanese address in English

  1. 1

    Enter your postal code

Type the seven digits of your 〒 code. The prefecture, city and town appear in English; if the code covers several towns, pick yours.

  2. 2

    Add the block number

Type 番地・号 the way you write it in Japanese, 1丁目2番3号 or 1-2-3, in any digits; it turns into 1-2-3.

  3. 3

    Add the building and room

Write the building name in katakana, hiragana or romaji and the room as 101 or 101号室. Kana is romanized as you type.

  4. 4

    Copy the format you need

Copy each form field on its own, the whole address on one line, or the rows for an envelope or a shipping label.

О инструменте «Japanese address in English»

Overseas shops such as iHerb, Amazon.com or eBay, foreign banks, visa and university forms, and friends sending a parcel from abroad all need your address in Latin letters. A Japanese address runs from the largest unit to the smallest, 〒874-0923 大分県別府市新港町1-2-3 サニーハイツ101, while an English one starts with the building and ends with the country, split across the fields of a form. This page does the reordering and the romanization.

The town, municipality and prefecture come from Japan Post's romanized data for your code, spelled the way the post office spells them: Shimminatomachi, Beppu-shi, Oita. The block number is rewritten in the hyphenated form that delivery staff in Japan read at a glance, so 1丁目2番3号 and 一丁目二番地の三 both become 1-2-3. A building name typed in kana is romanized in Hepburn without long-vowel marks, and common loanwords keep their English spelling: サニーハイツ becomes Sunny Heights rather than Sanihaitsu. A phone number swaps its leading zero for the country code, +81.

You get three versions: separate fields for a sign-up form, with one or two address lines; the whole address on one line; and up to four short rows for an envelope or label, in the order Japan Post gives for international mail, ending with JAPAN.

Building names in kanji are not converted, because one name can be read several ways and a wrong reading on a parcel is worse than none; type those in kana or romaji. Words such as 荘 or 号棟 are not translated either.

Конфиденциальность

Everything you type here, from the postal code to the phone number, stays in this page's memory: it is not saved in your browser, not sent anywhere, and gone when you close the tab. To find your town the page downloads Japan Post's public data for the first three digits of the code from this site, the same file for everyone with those digits; your full code, block number, building, room and phone never leave your device.

The order Japan Post gives for an address in English

Japan Post's page "How to Write the Address and Name", in the international mail section of post.japanpost.jp, asks for the Latin alphabet and Arabic numerals and lists five rows: first the name after "From", then the building name and room number if there is one, then the house number with the town or village, then the city and prefecture, and last the postal code and the country.

The envelope version on this page uses those rows without the name, which you add on top. A town or village (-machi, -cho, -mura) stays on the row with the house number, and the county or city goes on the row with the prefecture, the way Japan Post's Japanese page describes it (番地、丁・町村 and 郡市、都道府県).

Japanese address in English: частые вопросы

In what order does a Japanese address go in English?
Turn the Japanese order around and start small: building and room, then block number and town, then city and prefecture, then the postal code and the country. Japan Post's international mail guide uses these rows, so a label reads Sunny Heights 101 / 1-2-3 Shimminatomachi / Beppu-shi, Oita / 874-0923 JAPAN. On a web form the building usually goes in Address line 2.
What goes in Address line 1, Address line 2, City and State on iHerb or Amazon?
Address line 1 takes the block number and town (1-2-3 Shimminatomachi) and Address line 2 the building and room (Sunny Heights 101). City takes the municipality with its -shi, -ku, -machi or -mura, plus the ward in big cities (Chuo-ku, Sapporo-shi). State, Province or Region takes the prefecture (Oita), and the ZIP code keeps its hyphen: 874-0923.
How do I write 丁目, 番地 and 号 in English?
Write only the numbers, joined by hyphens, in the order 丁目, 番, 号: 3丁目5番12号 becomes 3-5-12 and 123番地4 becomes 123-4. There is no need to spell out chome or banchi on a form, since Japanese couriers read the hyphenated numbers. Put them before the town name, as in 3-5-12 Ginza. Full-width and kanji numerals are converted here.
My building name is in kanji. What should I type?
Type its reading in kana, or write it in romaji yourself. A kanji name can have several readings, and a wrong guess on a parcel is worse than none, so the page doesn't guess. Kana is romanized in Hepburn without long-vowel marks, as Japan Post spells towns, and loanwords common in building names, such as ハイツ or マンション, keep their English spelling.
How should I write my phone number on an overseas form?
Drop the leading 0 and put the country code +81 in front: 090-1234-5678 becomes +81-90-1234-5678 and 03-1234-5678 becomes +81-3-1234-5678. Calls and texts from abroad then reach you, and couriers in Japan can still read it. If the form has its own country code box, choose Japan (+81) and type 90-1234-5678 in the number field.
