Font maker 소개

Font maker turns your own handwriting into a font file you can install. Every key on the grid stands for one character: pick it, draw the letter on the canvas with a mouse, a finger or a stylus, and step on to the next key. Dashed lines mark the cap height, x-height and descender, a solid line marks the baseline, and a faint reference letter shows where that character usually sits, so capitals, small letters and tails line up from one key to the next.

For the preview and the download, each drawing is rasterized at 500 × 600 pixels and traced into closed vector outlines, with counters such as the inside of an O kept open. The outlines are smoothed and written into an OpenType .otf file with PostScript (CFF) curves at 1,000 units per em. A letter is as wide as its ink plus the letter spacing you set on each side, and it keeps the height you drew it at, so a g drawn below the baseline hangs below the line of text too. The file also holds a space and the empty .notdef box that some apps draw for characters the font lacks.

People use it for a personal handwriting font on invitations, cards and school worksheets, to turn a child's alphabet into a keepsake, to sketch logo lettering, or to letter comic speech bubbles.

The result has one style, Regular. There are no kerning pairs, ligatures or hinting, accented letters such as é or ü aren't on the grid, and the outlines follow your strokes exactly instead of being redrawn by a type designer, so shaky lines stay shaky.

개인정보 보호

The strokes, the tracing and the font file are all handled inside this page: a Web Worker turns the drawings into outlines and opentype.js writes the .otf, so no drawing or font is sent to a server. The project is stored in this browser's IndexedDB (or local storage) until you press Start over or clear the site's data, and an exported project file goes only where you save it.

기능

Pen, finger or stylus

Pressure-sensitive strokes with a stylus, plus pen width, eraser, undo, redo and guide lines.

A real .otf file

Each drawing is traced into vector outlines and saved as an OpenType font with your chosen name.

Kept between visits

The project stays in this browser, and you can export it as a JSON file to continue elsewhere.

Font maker: 자주 묻는 질문

How do I install the font after downloading it?
On Windows, right-click the .otf file and choose Install. On a Mac, double-click it and press Install Font in Font Book. iPhones and iPads need a font installer app, and Android support depends on the phone maker. Once it is installed, restart Word, Pages or your design app and pick the name you typed in the Font name field.
Why do some letters look too big or sit too high in a sentence?
Every letter keeps the size and position you drew it at, so a small letter drawn above the x-height line stands out next to its neighbours. Open that key and redraw it between the guide lines, or undo the stroke that went too far. Spacing comes from each drawing's width plus the letter spacing value, so a wide flourish also widens the gap around it.
Can I draw with a stylus and use pen pressure?
Yes. The canvas listens to pointer events, so a mouse, a finger and a pen all draw. When a stylus such as an Apple Pencil, S Pen or Wacom pen reports pressure, a light touch draws up to 60 percent thinner and a firm press up to 60 percent thicker than the chosen width. After the stylus touches the canvas, palm touches are ignored until you close the drawing window.
Which characters can I draw, and what happens to the rest?
The grid has A to Z, a to z, the digits 0 to 9 and 18 punctuation marks: ! ? . , ; : ' " - ( ) & @ # $ % / +. Switching on Cyrillic letters adds the Russian alphabet plus the Ukrainian Ґ, Є, І and Ї, in capitals and small letters. Characters you skip are left out of the font, so most apps borrow them from another font and a few show an empty box.
Are my drawings uploaded, and can I finish the font later?
No upload takes place. The strokes are traced and the font is assembled in your browser, and the project is saved to this browser's storage after every change, so it is still there when you return on the same device. To carry on from another computer or keep a backup, press Export project, then load that JSON file with Import project.
