計算方法
tax = net × rate · gross = net + tax
Adding tax to a price before tax.
net = gross ÷ (1 + rate) · tax = gross − net
Taking tax out of a price that includes it.

Amounts are kept in whole cents (or the currency's smallest unit) and the rate is applied exactly, so the only rounding is the one you choose for the tax. When you take tax out of a price, the tax amount is the figure that gets rounded and the net is what is left.

A tax with several parts, such as India's CGST and SGST or Canada's GST and QST, is rounded part by part. Indonesia's PPN for ordinary goods is 12% of a base worth 11/12 of the price, which is 11% of the price.

Sales tax calculator について

American shelf prices leave the tax off, so the number you pay at the register is the price plus a sales tax that depends on where you buy. This calculator starts from the state rate for all 50 states and Washington, D.C., taken from the Tax Foundation's table as of 1 July 2026, and adds the local rate you type for your city, county or special district. It then shows the tax, the total and the combined rate, or works backwards from a receipt total to the price before tax.

The combined rate at a store is the honest weak point of every sales tax calculator: local rates change street by street, and one ZIP code can include several cities and districts with different rates. This page doesn't look up addresses or ZIP codes and never claims to. For each state it offers the average local rate as a starting point, clearly labelled as an average, and the exact figure is on a receipt or in your state revenue department's rate lookup.

Five states charge no statewide sales tax — Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon — though Alaska's towns and some Montana resort areas levy their own. Groceries, clothing and prescriptions are exempt or taxed at a lower rate in many states, so in the Invoice lines view each item can be marked as taxable or not taxed, and the receipt is totalled the way a register does it.

The calculator doesn't cover use tax, hotel and rental car surcharges, or seller registration and filing.

プライバシー

Prices, rates and receipt lines are added up by the page in your browser; the state table is built into the page, so nothing you type is sent off to look up a rate. Recent inputs are remembered in this browser's local storage, and the price, state and local rate are kept in the page address so a copied link reopens them.

Sales tax calculator:よくある質問

How do I calculate sales tax on a price?
Add the state and local rates, turn the result into a decimal and multiply by the price. In Chicago, with 6.25% state tax and 4% in county, city and transit taxes, a $40 item carries 40 × 0.1025 = $4.10, for a total of $44.10. Enter the price, pick the state and type the local rate, and the calculator shows the tax, the total and the arithmetic.
Why doesn't the calculator use my ZIP code?
Because a ZIP code isn't a tax boundary. One ZIP can cover several cities, unincorporated county land and special districts, each with its own rate, so a ZIP-based rate can be wrong for half of the addresses in it. Rather than guess, the calculator asks for your local rate; your receipt or the state revenue department's address lookup gives the exact one.
How do I work out the price before tax from a total?
Divide the total by one plus the combined rate. A $108.25 receipt at 8.25% is 108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100 before tax, so the tax was $8.25. Simply taking 8.25% off the total would leave $99.32, which is too low. Choose Remove sales tax, enter the total and the calculator splits it for you, rounding the tax to the cent.
Which states have no sales tax?
Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no general sales tax, and Alaska has no state sales tax but lets its cities and boroughs charge one, averaging 1.82%. Montana also allows resort towns to add a local resort tax. Picking any of these states sets the state rate to zero, and you can still add a local rate where one applies.
Are groceries and clothing taxed?
It depends on the state. Many states exempt groceries or tax them at a lower rate, several exempt clothing, and prescriptions are exempt almost everywhere. Since January 2026 Illinois no longer charges its 1% state grocery tax, though many Illinois towns now charge their own. In the Invoice lines view, mark exempt items as not taxed or give them their own rate.
